Cathy, author of many books for young people, spoke to 3.1 English and all S1 classes.

Cathy ran a creative writing workshop with 3.1 English, sharing some great creative writing techniques. She talked about how she writes her books and gave the class strategies to help them start to write stories. She talked about how to start a story, create openings, and how she find ideas everywhere, for example, from graffiti on walls, and from overhead telephone calls.  As Scott noted ”I have learned that you can find ideas from anything.  I will definitely use this technique to help me.” Cathy focused on characterisation and the class had a short activity to do based on a character. The class found it valuable to have an author in school. All S1 classesenjoyed having a talk from Cathy, she talked about her books, her writing processes and showed the trailer for her book “Another Me”, that has been turned into a film. There were lots of enthusiastic questions being flung at Cathy and everyone enjoyed hearing what she had to say. The talk made an impact as her books have been flying off the library shelves since her visit!
