This is the ninth year that Torry Academy has been involved in Grampian Children’s Book Award. 1D1 participated in this book award which is voted for solely by pupils in S1-S3 in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray, so each pupil’s vote counts. Pupils read the six short listed books, voted for their favourite book, and had the opportunity to enter 3 competitions – to draw a poster, write a book review and create a book trailer on their favourite book. The top three chosen entries for each competition from across the North East would be presented with a prize.
The awards ceremony this year was held at the Arts Lecture Theatre, Aberdeen University on Wednesday 11th May with around 400 pupils, teachers and librarians from Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray present. Two of the short listed authors, Cathy MacPhail and Virginia Bergin, were present and they talked about writing and their books and where they get inspiration from. Previous shortlisted author, Barry Hutchison, hosted the event and injected a good bit of humour with plenty funny stories throughout the ceremony.
The winning book on the day was ‘Smart’ by Kim Slater. The pupils in 1D1 were an absolute credit to the school on the day and a fantastic time was had by all!
