Daniel Barker and Heleen Plaisier, Institute of Evolutionary Biology, University of Edinburgh took the Higher Biology class through the process of analysing DNA sequences and proteins using computer data bases. The students had to research and identify differences and similarities between different species based on a single enzyme.
Students were then given the opportunity to try out their computer skills using a Raspberry Pi, learning how to use simple commands and search complex data.
The students at Torry showed a great deal of aptitude for these skills even though the coursework during the tutorial was aimed at university undergraduate level.
