Aims

The main aims of this Course are for learners to:

  • develop scientific and analytical thinking skills in a chemistry context
  • develop an understanding of the role of chemistry in scientific issues
  • acquire and apply knowledge and understanding of concepts in chemistry
  • consider applications of chemistry on our daily lives, as well as environmental
  • and ethical implications

Courses

National 3, National 4, National 5, and Higher

Course Title: Nationa 3 Chemistry

Entry Requirements: At least level 3 developing in Science and Maths.

Course Content:

Unit 1 – Chemical Changes and Structure

Unit 2 – Natures Chemistry

Unit 3 – Chemistry in Society

Assessment: There are three outcomes to cover, involving practical investigations, set questions and research projects.

There is no external written exam

Progression: Pupils would progress to the N4 Chemistry course in S4.

 

Course Title: National 4 Chemistry

Entry Requirements: A secure understanding of level 3 Chemistry

Course Content:

Unit 1 – Chemical Changes and Structure

Unit 2 – Natures Chemistry

Unit 3 – Chemistry in Society

There are three outcomes to cover, involving practical investigations, set questions, research projects and an added value unit. The added value unit will be a research assignment from based on units 1, 2 or 3. Pupils are required to produce a report of their findings which is sat under exam conditions.

There is no external written exam.

Progression: Pupils would progress to the N5 Chemistry course in S4.

 

Course Title: National 5 Chemistry

Entry Requirements: A pass at National 4 Chemistry

Course Content:

Unit 1 – Chemical Changes and Structure

Unit 2 – Natures Chemistry

Unit 3 – Chemistry in Society

Assessment: There are three outcomes to cover, involving practical investigations, set questions, research projects and an added value unit. The research assignment will be based on units 1, 2 or 3. Pupils are required to produce a report (500-800 words) of their findings which is sat under exam conditions.

There will also be an external written exam.

Progression: Pupils would progress to the Higher Chemistry course.

 

Course Title: Higher Chemistry

Entry Requirements: An A/B pass at National 5 Chemistry

Course Content:

Unit 1 – Chemical Changes and Structure (20 hours)

Unit 2 – Natures Chemistry (40 hours)

Unit 3 – Chemistry in Society (40 hours)

Unit 4 – Researching Chemistry (20 hours)

Assessment: There are three outcomes to cover, involving practical investigations, End of unit assessments and a researching Physics assignment. The researching Chemistry assignment is a stand-alone unit and will be linked to content in units 1, 2 or 3. Pupils are required to produce a report of their findings, which is sat under exam conditions.

There will also be an external written exam

Progression: Pupils would progress to the Advanced Higher Chemistry course.
